Technology is the key to development, especially when farmers in Maharashtra battle the lowest yield per hectare (in comparison with different states). Soil cards, scientific knowledge about usage of fertilizers, availability of high quality seeds, optimum utilization of irrigated water and using forecasting signals to ensure higher yield is critical. Informing and educating farmers on likely weather conditions, export potentials and requirements of international markets will help farmers to a great extent.
Essentials Without Corruption
Maharashtra is a severally drought prone state. Corruption in irrigation sector has further failed our farmers. We need to ensure that benefit of every rupee invested in irrigation is reaped by farmers. Easy availability of micro-irrigation technology and hardware, seed, fertilizers, electricity, cold storages, processing industries, allied services is essential for revival of agriculture sector. The benefits of investment in these sectors are long term. Reduction in leakage of the subsidies will ensure maximum budget reaching farmers.
Farm to Foreign Policy
Eliminate middleman. Reduce wastage. Slash time of transportation. Connect farmers to the markets. If cotton is grown in Vidarbha, why should the factory be at other locations in Maharashtra? Let the inputs be available at hand. And let the farm be connected to storage, processing units and markets. Availability of rail and air transport will help the farmers to connect to national and international markets. Development of agriculture sector will boost the economy, it will result in development of rural areas and will stop migration to the cities.
